About KCET 2027

The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) is the state-level entrance examination conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for admissions to undergraduate programmes in Engineering, Pharmacy, Agriculture, and Veterinary Science across government and private colleges in Karnataka. KCET is the primary route to some of India's most cost-effective engineering seats — government quota seats under KCET cost as low as ₹35,000–70,000 per year at premier colleges like BMSCE, Ramaiah, and PES University.

KCET 2027 follows an OMR-based (offline) examination pattern spread across two days: Physics and Chemistry on Day 1, and Mathematics on Day 2. The exam is notable for its moderate difficulty level and no negative marking policy, giving Karnataka domicile students a significant advantage through Horanadu/Gadinadu Kannadiga reservations. KCET rank also determines eligibility for the COMEDK UGET exam under certain conditions. With over 1 lakh candidates appearing each year, a rank below 10,000 in KCET generally guarantees a Computer Science seat at a reputed college.

How to Crack KCET 2027: Strategy & Tips

1KCET is based on Karnataka State Board (PUC-II) syllabus — use PUC-II textbooks alongside NCERT for a comprehensive approach.
2Physics and Chemistry are conducted on the same day with a short break; build stamina by practising full-length back-to-back mock tests.
3Focus on previous 5 years' KCET papers — the exam repeats question types (especially in Chemistry and Mathematics) with high predictability.
4Score as high as possible in Mathematics — it is the differentiator; most toppers score 55+/60 in Maths to secure ranks under 5,000.
5Check the reservation category carefully — Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadiga seats offer dramatically lower cutoffs for eligible candidates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What KCET rank is needed to get CSE at top Bengaluru colleges?▾

For Government quota CSE seats: BMSCE requires around rank 500–1,500; Ramaiah IT around 2,000–4,000; DSCE around 5,000–8,000 (General category, 2026 cutoffs). For Management quota seats through KCET, cutoffs are typically 5–10x higher. Ranks vary by category and year.

What is the difference between KCET and COMEDK?▾

KCET is a state exam open primarily to Karnataka domicile students for Government, Aided, and Management quota seats. COMEDK UGET is open to all Indian students (no domicile requirement) for Management quota seats in COMEDK member colleges. Both exams cover PCM, and many colleges participate in both.

Do Kannadiga students get reservation benefits in KCET?▾

Yes. Horanadu Kannadigas (Karnataka origin settled outside the state) and Gadinadu Kannadigas (Karnataka students studying in border states) get special reservation under KEA norms. Additionally, SC, ST, OBC, and EWS quotas apply with lower cutoff ranks.

How many total engineering seats are available through KCET in Karnataka?▾

Approximately 70,000–80,000 engineering seats are available across Government, Aided, and Private colleges through the KCET counselling process. This includes roughly 15–20% Government quota seats at top colleges.

What is the difference between State quota and Management quota seats in KCET?▾

State quota seats (Government quota — 65–70% of total seats in private colleges) are filled through KEA counselling based on KCET rank. Management quota seats (30–35%) are filled by the college directly, often at higher fees and with lower rank requirements.

What documents are required for KCET document verification?▾

Key documents include: 10th and PUC-II mark sheets, Karnataka domicile certificate (parent's 10 years' residence proof), caste/category certificate (if applicable), income certificate for EWS, school study certificate, SSLC/PUC school certificates, and Aadhaar card.
